at high performance and never being able to say (it's me). Op.Dr. Hakan BayriWhat Is Proper Toilet Habit? A Guide to Prevent Constipation & Protect Anal Health – Ankara | Dr. Hakan Bayri
28.12.2025
Healthy bowel movement is not only about nutrition — correct toilet habits play a major role. Hemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistula and constipation are often triggered or worsened by incorrect toilet behavior.
As Op. Dr. Hakan Bayri, a colorectal & proctology specialist in Ankara, my goal is not only to treat patients, but to help them maintain long-term anal comfort through proper toilet education.
Why it matters
-
Reduces constipation risk
-
Prevents hemorrhoids and bleeding
-
Lowers the risk of anal fissure
-
Prevents prolonged sitting and unnecessary straining
-
Supports comfortable bowel evacuation
Do not sit too long
Sitting on the toilet longer than 5 minutes increases pressure in the anal veins. If nothing happens within 3–5 minutes, stand up and try again later.
Correct position
The natural defecation position is squatting. Using a small footstool to elevate the knees above the hips helps relax the pelvic floor muscles.
Avoid straining
Forceful straining damages the anal skin and vessels. Breathing deeply and relaxing the muscles allows natural passage. If stool is hard, fiber and water intake should be adjusted.
Respond to the urge
Avoid delaying bowel movements. Delay leads to harder stool and worsens constipation.
Morning routine
Drinking water after waking, light walking, and then sitting briefly on the toilet helps train the bowel.
Diet recommendations
-
2–2.5 liters of water daily
-
25–30 grams of fiber
-
Fermented foods (yogurt, kefir)
-
Fiber supplements if needed
Hygiene
Prefer cleaning with water. Avoid harsh soaps and wet wipes. Dry the area gently.
