Why Do Anal Discharge and Recurrent Swelling Occur? Anal Fistula Symptoms

    BLOG 06.01.2026

Anal discharge and recurrent swelling are often considered temporary problems by many patients. However, if these symptoms are recurrent, they may indicate an underlying anorectal disease. The most common causes include anal fistula, perianal abscess, and chronic anorectal conditions.

This article explains the causes of anal discharge and recurrent swelling, when these symptoms should be taken seriously, and current diagnostic and treatment approaches in a clear and scientific manner.

    What Is Anal Discharge?

Anal discharge may be clear, purulent, foul-smelling, or bloody. Persistent moisture, staining of underwear, and odor usually indicate an ongoing infection or inflammatory process.

    What Does Recurrent Swelling Mean?

Recurrent swelling around the anus is commonly associated with perianal abscess, anal fistula, or infected hemorrhoids. Temporary reduction of swelling does not mean complete recovery.

    Anal Fistula

An anal fistula is an abnormal tract between the anal canal and the surrounding skin, usually developing after a perianal abscess. Symptoms include intermittent or persistent discharge, recurrent swelling, pain while sitting, and odor. Anal fistulas do not heal spontaneously and require surgical treatment.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made through proctologic examination and pelvic MRI when necessary. Treatment is planned according to the type and extent of the disease, aiming to eliminate infection while preserving sphincter function.

    Conclusion

Anal discharge and recurrent swelling should not be ignored. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment lead to successful and lasting outcomes.
