    What Is Rubber Band Ligation?

Rubber band ligation is a safe and effective, non-surgical treatment method used primarily for grade 2 and grade 3 internal hemorrhoids. In this technique, a special rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply. The hemorrhoidal tissue shrinks and falls off spontaneously over time.

How Is Rubber Band Ligation Performed?

The procedure is usually performed in an outpatient setting and does not require anesthesia. Using an anoscope, the internal hemorrhoid is identified and a rubber band is applied to its base with a special applicator. The procedure takes only a few minutes, and the patient can return to normal activities the same day.
